Amidst the darkness 

In woods at night

A startling fright 

Whispers in moonlight 

Rustling of leaves

Is something watching 

Among the forest trees?

Quickening of steps 

Anticipating dread 

Around each corner next 

Venturing ever further  

Into danger so black 

Hair-raising goosebumps 

Crawling up your back 

Hidden in shadows

A need so primal

Ravaged by sight

Waiting to pounce 

Ready for the kill  

Those glowing red eyes 

Devouring every thrill

  5. Wow, so evocative! It actually triggered a memory. When I was a kid out in the boonies of west Boca back in the 70s…with dark skies… I’d be out way past midnight with my telescope. Everybody else way over there in the house, sleeping… these trees swaying and creaking just like your pix… I was a kid, dang… a quick peek through the telescope followed by a sweep of the woods with my dinky flashlight. When I packed it in for the night, I had to resist the urge to break into a panicky run. I fully expected something like from your poem to spring from the trees and grab me πŸ˜‚πŸ˜±πŸ˜‰

Ahhh your story sounds hair-raising and spooky 😱 lol πŸ˜† I know that feeling of β€œdark night” like something is there just waiting and watching. πŸ‘€ Stargazing a dark sky in west Boca sounds lovely though (wonder how much light pollution has ruined that!?) πŸ”­ I just bought a small telescope, hoping to go somewhere I can use it for real! πŸ˜‚ ✨ πŸŒ™

      • Laura, if you ever get a chance to go down to the Keys for a few days, stash your scope in your car. The skies in the Keys, esp the middle ones (except right around Marathon) are amazing. In the summer, esp, the Milky Way is phenomenal. And I read on 1/25-1/26, we’re gonna a rare conjunction of 6 planets! πŸ˜ŽπŸ„β€β™‚οΈ
