Calaveras de Muertos

This is a submission for Kevin’s No Theme Thursday.

Amidst a celebration, within dead and dark of night

Sacred candles flicker, upon mystical altars of light

Calaveras dance, adorned in crowns of marigold

Our Lady of Most Holy Death, your season to behold

In reverence, we remember, our ancestors rise

Through love, to commemorate, we look toward the skies

Gates of spirit realms open, their souls to come home

Veils between worlds thin, as they wander and roam

An ofrenda, a prayer, traditions we observe through time

Life a borrowed moment, Death once again intertwines

Enveloping and encompassing, like a child’s warm laugh

To feel their hug once more, a smile, on their behalf

Their presence is palpable, with love’s lost embrace

Bittersweet memories, existing between time and space

Listen to their voices, with messages that are clear

Forever remember them – their love and guidance always near

If you’ve been reading me for a while, you know that Día de los Muertos is an important time for me, as all death celebrations are.

Typically, there is a festival of remembrance from November 1st through November 2nd, (which some may be more familiar with similar like All Soul’s Day or Allhallowtide) but the holiday can also include dates such as October 31st and November 6th.

According to tradition, the gates of the spirit world are opened at midnight on October 31st so the souls of children may rejoin their families for 24 hours. The souls of adults may do the same on November 2nd.

Even though this period of time is incredibly special and sacred, I know they are forever near me.

As they are with you, too.

Always remember. Never forget.

  2. Well done! The ancient purpose of ” Día de muertos, día de todos los santos” is the legacy of our ancestors; their wisdom, their company, the sincere attention. It’s a holly day. The offer is the meal they liked while they were alive ( it changes the flavor after their visit).
It’s not the party, but the insights about the life cycle. You could find amazing images about the ritual at

    • Oh god I’m sorry, I know it keeps stopping me from liking or commenting and it’s so annoying, I can like a few and comment a few but then it starts sending me to spam! Very frustrating. 😩 Happy Halloween! 🎃 👻 Glad you liked it 😊

      • The same to you I actually got an email from their security department today telling me that I cannot like or subscribe to anything, because my activity was considered BOT activity, which it isn’t.

They accuse me of promoting my blog instead of getting readers naturally, which is a lie. I never push my blog on anybody. I do subscribe to a lot of other blogs and they subscribe to me and vice versa, but that’s part of blogging.

I’m strongly considering leaving WordPress because I’m not gonna play games like this and I think they’re also manipulating my numbers too .

      • I don’t blame you at all. I’ve considered it myself with some of the theft I’ve experienced. It’s very frustrating especially with the landing in spam but yet they can’t seem to keep actual spammers out of the platform. Sorry for what you’ve been experiencing

  3. this is beautiful Laura. i can’t articulate it without typing out a huge comment but i also believe it’s important to keep those that have passed close to us.

I don’t know if you’ve ever watched the movie Interstellar with Matthew McConaughay but Anne Hathaway has a short monologue there that is so profound about those that have passed. I’d link it but I didn’t want to spoil the movie for you if you didn’t see it yet. Have a great day!

    • Aww thanks so much Mike! 😊 I’m so glad you liked it. I’ve heard of the movie but I don’t think I’ve seen it, I’ll have to look it up now! Thanks for sharing that 🙏 I hope you have a great day and your appreciation always means so much to me ✨

  4. Good poem, Laura. The image goes so well with your words. I’ve told you how living and dead friends and relatives are in my dreams. The other night, I felt my father’s presence so strongly that I woke up and then watched his spirit move across the room.

Perfection as always, Laura ❤ … I’m sticking around but like that post it note that has lost its stickiness (lol) !!! I hope you have a wickedly awesome day minus thievery and unnecessary exploitation (can’t believe they didn’t even try and doctor the post!) … More importantly the veil is at its thinnest and we are almost to the gates … Wish I was there because that partaaay would be LIT!!!!

    • Come to the party!! 😆 I shouldn’t have looked but I’m soooo pissed now because the thief changed the date on the stolen post from October 28th to September 20th, trying to play off like he had it before mine was ever posted. 😡 I’m just ready for the nightmare to be over, and I’m sick of it 😩 but yes, a party among the dead and the living would indeed be a fun time with you there, we need to do karaoke! ❤️ 🎤 🎵

      • Laura don’t allow this to consume you (promise me) … I myself am a ghost b/c of this and another good blogger had her site completely ripped off and then tormented by them (for YEARS) … It’s better to shine bright and leave them to their own demise! BUT karaoke … We’d bring the house down (LOLOL) !!!!

  6. Is anyone else coming to Laura’s posts for comments just as much as for the actual posts? 😀 just me?

joke aside: some words in your poem gave me chills. Read it twice just to see it wasn’t a fluke. Nope, still getting chills.

    bravo!

    • We do indeed haunt them, in many ways I’d imagine 😀 thank you, Tash. Honestly a bit more of a hard one to crank out with all the BS going on in the last week, but I wanted to do something special for it 🙏

  7. A wonderful poem, and perfect image. I feel a little sad I’ve missed the holidays this year, wobbling back into life, but there’s also an in-between quality to it all. Thank you for putting such heart into your writing.

  8. 🧚🏻‍♀️Wow, what a fantastic celebration, a beautiful and refined poem about a subject that many people dread, death, the inevitable, the unknown. I believe that the work of these sisters is very difficult, caring for the souls that arrive there, giving themselves to do the energetic cleansing of those who arrive, often in a state of consciousness and in a degraded astral body. Thank you for sharing this knowledge with us in a beautiful poem. I wish you a great start to the week.🤗🙌🏻✨🧚🏻‍♀️🌌
