Psychopompós

This is a submission for Kevin’s No Theme Thursday.

Image by Kevin from The Beginning at Last

Leading to your final destination

No longer time for any explanation

Crossing into the subtle realms

Dread overtakes you with overwhelm

Elysian Fields your final resting space?

Or perhaps Tartarus is a better place?

Choices in life you can’t mend now

Until next lifetime – a solemn vow

With each step, there’s no going back

Guiding to the light or the inky black

What lies ahead is an unknown fate

Will you stand before the pearly gates?

Perhaps in the void, with nothing more?

Maybe Limbo, as you walk through the door?

Destined to repeat mistakes from the past?

This short journey of life is ending at last

Only you know which life you lead, what choices you make, and how you may be judged in the end.

Psychopomps is from the Greek word ψυχοπομπός, (psychopompós) – which means “guide of souls,” and are found in many religions as deities or spirits which lead the dead into the afterlife.

  1. Hi Laura,
    Someone once said:
It is in our nature to judge those around us. We judge how strangers dress, how our neighbours maintain their lawns, and how our friends behave in public… Yes, we are constantly carrying out this kind of judgment… without ever coming to mind that one day we may be judged. Yes, it is in our nature to judge those around us. Just as it is in our nature to make others take the responsibility for our mistakes.
    Petit bonjour de France.

    • It is absolutely a person’s nature to judge, however – as you so rightly said, in the end will be our own final judgment. I guess we’ll wait and see 😆 but yes, your words ring very true.

  2. ‘Choices in life you can’t mend now,’ what an excellent phrase. I accept my past and have asked for forgiveness. I believe this has happened as I am not the a-hole I used to be, a calming peacefulness have enveloped me. I will still explore the wild side but now do it without the reckless abandonment I use to have. Thanx for another fabulous post.

    • That’s all we can do – we are human, after all. Accept what’s in the past, and try to do better for the future. Living in peace is the best thing, once you feel that, and all is well, there’s not much that can disturb you. We can only stay in the darkness so long, but it still creeps in here and there. I feel ya on the “wild side” but a more tame version of it. And thank you for your comments, Ernie! 😊

  3. A fantastically written and yet haunting poem, Laura. Where does the journey lead, and what truly awaits? Always, life and the afterlife, are mysteries shrouded in speculations. Outstanding indeed. 🙏

    • Thank you Kevin 🙏 I appreciate your image, and at the risk of sounding like I’m crazy (who ever would think that?!) I feel like I dreamt the whole poem or something, and your image matched up perfectly for it. I’m rambling now and probably not making sense but 🤪
