Scrub Pocket Diaries

Daily writing prompt
What is the most important thing to carry with you all the time?

Sooo…as a nurse, literally the most important thing we carry is usually everything we keep on us, lol which can be a little ridiculous and irritating at times.

More pockets, please!

I need, need, need scrub tops with a ton of pockets, pockets upon pockets, and even more pockets and even pants with pockets to hold all of my crap.

Some nurses carry fanny packs and that’s just a “hell nah” for me, but to each their own.

Nope…I’m sorry, there’s no way to make this look cute or usable 😂

I don’t carry a purse either at work, cause I’m always go-go-going and I ain’t got time for all that.

In my day-to-day, if I carry one it’s a small over the shoulder crossbody bag. I’m a light traveler 24/7. (Any of the men reading this are now snoozing quite nicely) 💤 😴

Who would’ve guessed, the wandering soul likes to travel light?! I don’t like to hold onto anything either. 😆

Don’t hand me something and say, “hold this,” because it will most likely get misplaced. 🤷‍♀️

Lip balm, not lipstick! Also, who doesn’t want those cool ass controller ear buds? 🎮 btw, who said anything about pencils? ✏️

Anyways, with alllll that to-do and hoorah and everything said, the most important thing I carry on me at all times besides my phone, keys, lip balm (because no one wants dry ass lips) and my wallet is:

A pen. 🖊️

And what a fancy pen it is!

Yep.

I might as well be naked if I don’t have a pen on me. The level of terror that strikes through my heart when I realize I’ve forgotten my dang pen is beyond comprehension. 😱

Really? But why did you have to add the goofy cap? 😫

Chaotic insanity, and not the good chaos.

P.S. – Nurses are known for being pen thieves, just sayin. 😇

Happy Friday! Weekend is here!

  1. Oh yes. With working in the NHS hospital one time for years as a cleaner I know pockets are very important for nurses and pens like gold.
When I used to be a cleaner at the hospital, pockets were important to me. I didn’t need as much as a nurse. But still needed pockets for a pen, small notepad, my phone and inhaler. Spare nitrile gloves in case one ripped any second from cleaning.

I may not clean in a hospital now. But as a cleaner, pockets are still important.
I created my own cleaning uniform with no uniform given. But I already had these to hand with one time considering to create a self-employed pet business.
I wear a polo t-shirt and cargo trousers. My cargo trousers have enough pockets to cover carrying my small notebook, set of keys needed. (Although officially I am locked out if no business is there in one block of units I clean because the main door had a new lock put on and no one thought about the cleaner. So it doesn’t get done if no one there. Not my problem. They know.)
My pen I keep in my bag as not far to get if needed. Which is hardly.
Pop a cloth in a pocket that I use for glass.

My phone used to be in a pocket on the leg. But when I had the phone I have now, it’s a little to big to close pocket, so I have a spiel belt. That’s the brand name. But it’s a stretchy fanny pack. But I don’t wear it around the waist. I have fastened through belt loops of my trousers so it’s on the side of my waist.

    • Pockets are definitely a necessity! I wear pretty much everything on me, and then some lol 😂 but yeah I definitely have phone and my pen and wallet, chapstick and anything else I’ve decided to carry, keys, etc. your bag doesn’t sound too bad, kinda like something almost like a crossbody bag haha. I do think they should have pockets on most, or all clothes! Thanks for sharing, Liz!

      • I think. But I may be wrong has I have had mine for a number of years, I think they had longer strap versions of these spibelts so they could be cross body worn. (I realised I spelt it a little wrong before. Spibelt is correct spelling.)

      • Ahh yes I see, I just looked it up because I had never heard of it before. It looks much more stylish than a fanny pack 😂

      • Yes. Definitely more stylish. Before I discovered them, I nearly bought a fanny pack. But once I seen the Spibelt, I thought definitely this.

  2. I don’t know. I kinda like the goofy cap.

That probably says something about me, doesn’t it?

I used to carry a sporran-sized army surplus cross-body bag around everywhere when I was younger. There were always the inevitable “purse” taunts but there was no better place to store pens and writing journals (as well as other sundries).

Have a great break from work this weekend.

  3. Very entertaining post 😊 Yeah, I’m notorious for losing pens. My record is having lost six pens in a day. That’s why I never had an expensive pen in my life. It just doesn’t work 😉

  4. Great post. Thanks for this very endearing glimpse!

In 1980 while working at the YMCA Summer camp one of the campers gave me a set of scrubs. For some reason I adopted those scrubs to my wardrobe and I later wore them hitchhiking all across the states and Canada. They were comfortable, rugged, and easy to clean. And on a cool October morning in British Columbia you could just slip them on and cinch them. Embarrassingly, a lot of my old travel photos I am seen wearing those. I am not sure why I even mention all this, except your prompt prompted me to. I have never worn scrubs since, but the original pair are fondly remembered! 😊

I’d like to hear about your hitchhiking story, that’s gotta make for a very interesting read!

  5. the pen… mighty it is 😋lol…

“Nurses are known for being pen thieves, just sayin. 😇”… thankfully we don’t have any pens… I repeat…we don’t have pens 🤭😂

    • I don’t think I’ve heard of that. Is it like a crossbody bag? I tried looking it up but didn’t see anything.

I forgot about waiters! So true! I couldn’t have enough pens when I used to wait tables back in the day

  6. They are small pouches that sit on your thigh, rather than hip like fanny packs do. I have seen a few cross body bags that can be positioned that way. Sometimes they are called motorcycle bags? I have a slim one, and a larger steampunk type version for longer trips.

I have disproportionately long arms, so the lower reach works better for me. Also, actual usable pockets. In addition to my keys, glasses and cards, I also carry a slim torch and a folding knife. Sometimes a lighter, if I am in the countryside.

(No jokes from Kevin about the arms.)

    • Haha! Nice, thank you for sharing Tash. Motorcycle bags I’ve heard of.
And yes, no long arms jokes here! lol 😂 thanks for the inspiration, I’m gonna have to look into that to see if it’s something that could suit me for traveling down the road. 😊

  7. Thank you for taking care of others. I have been in the medical field for almost 9 years now and have a love/hate relationship with it now, but one thing I totally agree with you on and LOVE – is tons of pockets on my scrubs top! 🙂 I too – carry anything and everything. I once wore a hoodie and scrub pants with two pockets. BIG MISTAKE! Lesson learned lol. I like the scrub tops with the big pockets and the two littles right behind it. Have a great day!

      • LOL Yes, me too! There have been times I come home and empty my pockets, and my kids look at me funny wondering why I have some of the weird things I have in there. haha
