This is a submission for Kevin’s No Theme Thursday.

Nobody knows
The lies I’ve told
No one suspects
What always unfolds
The mask that lies
Beneath the skin
The liar underneath
The devil within
That hidden facade
It strikes your core
Unable to fathom
What’s in store
Antisocial and angry
Look in the mirror
Mentally ill
A hidden trigger
Perhaps I’m a killer
Or maybe I’m innocent
Hearing voices
Must always stay vigilant
No one understands
What I’ve been through
No one gets it
Maybe I’m screwed
Perhaps I’m done for
And this is the end
You’ll never acknowledge
My narcissistic trend
Always a problem
Never a solution
In the end
Where’s my absolution?

What do you see when you look in the mirror?

Who truly knows what lies beneath the grand facade?
Excellent poem, Laura! Well penned! 👏👏👏

Very true! Always chills me to the bone sometimes because you can’t often see a person’s true colors until it’s (just about) too late.
Thank you, Kevin! And a wonderful image to accompany! (As usual) 😊

I see the reflection of me. I take a look at it and explore what I’d like to change but sometimes I notice that this reflection has something I have not and what I liked to have. Then I save it in my head and practice until I also have it and then I go back to the mirror and I will see we both smile and I realize, my reflection seems to be my friend and oh.. always been.. good post Miss Bennett 😎

Thank you very much! 😊 so appreciated, and thanks for sharing; I think we all have things we’d like to change of course, admitting that sometimes is hard for people. And yet, we should also be comfortable with ourselves as well. 🙏

Your welcome but your poem is the main thing and it is beautiful, artistic and thoughts awakening. When it comes to the mirror or dreams, the answers are much closer than you think. Just take a bit sharper look, they’re there for you 😋

About your poem though I think you know this already. You are also a mirror reflecting the image of the one who looks at you and that one sees what he/she really is and if this one is wise enough, changes if needed. Question is, is your poem a mirror or you or both? Clever you 😋 Ciao 😎

The poem is supposed to encompass all the different mental illnesses out there, so indeed it could reflect many different types of people

We all got two sides and they are friends and foe.
I dug how you broke it down and brought so many constrantings things to light. You know we dig into our family tree and the strangest thing those dynamics you get from your folks or grandparents, however there is that odd uncle. Aunt or cousins which the dual sides are traits which connect with certain things we do. For instance if your mom or pops ever said oh you is crazy as such and such, or the phrases which happen. And like night and day or the politics we play in the scene and yet away we differ. OK I’m gonna chill from rambling, dug and Identified with where you were going and very stunning work, peace

Very true! And thank you for your detailed analysis, always like to hear what you have to say, and indeed we can pick up many different traits from different family members, some good, some bad, and luckily some of the uglier ones, not at all. Phew! lol 😆

I tend to avoid mirrors. Mirrors and cameras.
Good reflections, Laura. So to speak.

Thank you! Indeed, it’s a reflection of most and many in some form or another, I think.😊 I feel if someone can’t find something in there to relate to, well…that must be extremely hard to face in some other types of ways lol 😆

Your words capture the expression in the drawing perfectly. A very powerful message Laura.

Is it just me, or does that art work have a resemblance to Hugh Laurie of ‘House’? Why House would be wearing an ascot is random, unless that Hugh Laurie as the ‘Sense and Sensibility’ character. Nice job on your poem!!

Omg! He reminds me of “House” too! That was actually the first thing I thought as well lol 😆 thank you!

A nun gave little Mary a long talk on sin, prayer, and forgiveness.
When she finished the lesson, she asked little Mary, “What do we have to do before we ask the Lord for forgiveness?”
Little Mary Confidently said, “Sin”

A striking image and dramatic writing, Laura. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde came to mind. 🎭

It is a novel I taught to 10th graders. After reading your poem I regret not having them write poetry to the classic tale. You’re welcome. Thank you for the intriguing read. P.S. When I look in the mirror, I see more silver and a woman embracing life and aging gracefully. 🩶

Wonderful poem, Laura. Like Michele said, reading the poem and seeing the image brought Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to mind. Well done. Since I don’t have much hair, what I see when I look in the mirror is a lot of money saved by cutting my own hair. 😂

Thanks Edward! And I felt the same thing too when I looked at the image (while also simultaneously thinking the image resembled Dr. House lol) and omg haha!! 😂 that’s too funny. I too save money from cutting my own hair as well 🤣 thanks for sharing!

It wasn’t just me then, that thought he looked liked Dr. House.
I absolutely loved watching Dr.House.
I had read this poem earlier when it not long aired. I thought I had clicked the like button at the time.
A powerful poem that I can relate to as I have depression myself. But it’s better than it once was. Anxiety I can have a lot.
My mum’s mental health is worse which I have grew up with. So aware of how bad someone’s mental health can be.
I have seen the stigma also growing up towards people with mental health. My mum has felt stigma alot being like before I was even born. And as well as understanding or seeing stigma towards mum or people with mental health in general, I have had it a little too. But nothing compared to the extent I have seen towards others.

House was cool! I liked that show a lot.
And thanks so much for sharing your story! That pesky like button eludes us all all the time 😆
It’s relatable I think most definitely. I’ve never met someone who didn’t have some form of depression or anxiety, and even though it can mild, I do think it can affect us all.
So sorry to hear about your mum. That’s rough ☹️ and yes the stigma can be hard, hopefully it changes eventually though. Especially when people work very hard not to be plagued by it day in and day out

You’re right. It looks like Dr. House. Well, you’re definitely saving more money than me then. Women’s haircuts are crazy expensive.

Hahaha that’s true! I always think I may go out and get my hair done but no one ever does it the way I like anyways! So at home trims it is 😆 🤣 lol

So sorry Tash, I hope you do feel seen in some sense in the poem, it’s supposed to be for all people who struggle with mental illness, I know many do in some form or another ❤️ and thank you 🙏

I do, Laura, I discerned your intentions. I think it is my own thoughts that bothered me.

Goodness, I’ve missed a lot the last few days. This has great energy, even though it’s an intense/negative subject. It’s complex, because the same so-called characteristics or diagnoses can show up in two different people, and one be someone you admire and are able to be around, yet in another they’re dangerous qualities that have to be distanced from. I’m glad so some are able to talk about these topics in complex ways, and you’re able to do so creatively!

Thank you for seeing it that way! It’s hard to give an explanation for it sometimes and that’s why I felt I needed to do so people know where it comes from, but also I don’t like writing negative stuff but I’m trying to get better at being more forward with it if I can be. Thank you, your words mean a lot to me ❤️
