This is a submission for Kevin’s No Theme Thursday.
He walked in one day and swept me off my feet
Little did I know that’s how we’d meet
I worked this job long into the night
A routine that was safe, bleeding into daylight

He came one night, ordered coffee – black
Asked me name as I turned my back
“What’s it to you?” I said, more rudely than I should
“Because perhaps you aren’t doing everything you could.”
I eyed him suspiciously, he wasn’t my type
Why did he care what I did with my life?
“You’re destined in time for so much more –
Other than taking orders, or sweeping floors,”
I replied, “No choice mister, I’ve got bills to pay.”
Not revealing the real reason, day after day
Itβs embarrassing when youβve got no place to stay
He took his coat, “Change your path now, or you’ll regret it one day.β
He gazed my way, then walked out the door
Putting my head down, not sure what’s in store
I looked at his bill – he left me a massive tip!
Much larger than usual, so I decided to take a trip

Driving as fast as possible, into the city that night
I couldn’t believe the sounds or the dazzling lights
He was right, I needed to make a change
I was young but tired of playing hard life games
Re-do everything, in the blink of an eye?
Was it as easy as wishing upon stars in the sky?
No, not at all – it took so much hard work
I failed many times, and ran into a ton of jerks

All the years later, Iβll never forget that night
He was a beacon to me, my guiding light
I never saw him again, but it didnβt matter
I think he knew he helped me climb the ladder
Lucky I was, that I was able to survive
And now Iβm so thankful, even at thirty-five
A work in progress, we should always be
But letβs not forget the angels, who guide us miraculously
Β©οΈ Laura Bennett
Never forget who helped you get to where you are today, and how much hard work and progress it still takes for you to make the choice on your own to do better for yourself. Someone can push you and give you all the help in the world – but it is you who makes the final decision to better your life.

Excellent! π

This is really good, it sounds very real. ”I never saw him again” I think he sees you all the time also just now, and smiling..

Excellent tale told in verse, Laura. And you are very right – We should always be grateful to those who help and guide us on this highway of life. We might do the work, but they set us on the path when we can’t always see it ourselves. π

This poem is one of my favorite, there are a few very interesting features. One of them is this. Back to the other day or rather night. I went to bed and fell in sleep, I had a dream, crystal clear. Then I woke up next morning and I remembered that dream very clearly and every details. After my morning coffee I checked out what people had posted on WordPress. I came to your site and you had posted this poem and I read it and smiled too. Your poem was exactly the same as my dream, I couldn’t but smile. One thing there was different, from the point your poem ends my dream still continued. I wonder is there coming the part 2 to this poem. You have also other posts I have seen before you have posted. But actually I think I possibly saw something about your life, if so you will have an interesting life ahead of you. This poem has also some other interesting features. Rock Girl really rocksπ Have a great upcoming weekend and I hope you are happy and healthy. I am happy to see that you are doing so well with your art and getting some ones to smile and even being able to visit in some ones’ dreamsππ
