Heat Wave

This is a submission for Kevin’s No Theme Thursday.

Among this heat, I long for a swim

With Florida’s humidity, I can never win

Otherworldly fire burning even at night

Wanting to blot out the sun’s bright light

A bit of respite, feeling cool ocean waves

Blinding heat setting my mind in a haze

Longing for cold in this stifling blaze

Counting down relief for the next 100 days

Solar energy feeling like the depths of hell

It makes you more tired and often unwell

So Fall and Winter, I’d love to have you back

Even if it’s not snow, this heat is just whack

  1. Hahaha … 🙂 The heat is whack! I woke up to clouds and it’s cooler! I don’t know how long it will last, but I’m going to follow the clouds wherever they lead me. Happy Weekend and catchy poetic-ness, Laura ❤ !!!!

    • Haha, thank you lovely ❤️ I had overcast for the last 3 days or so and it wasn’t too bad! Sunny today however, ahhh! Enjoy your bit of clouds and hopeful respite, and a lovely weekend to you as well! 😊

  2. I hear you. I went outside this morning and already regretted life’s decisions as soon as I stepped out. Within moments I was drenched in sweat. I am not a summer child by any means and this approaching 90°F by the end of the day with matching 90% humidity sucks.

Try to stay cool and hydrated, my friend.

    • Thank you 😊 I really do appreciate that! And ugh, 90% humidity?! Sounds like a nightmare, I’m sorry. I hate walking outside for just a moment and being soaked ugh. We’re at 74% humidity so not as bad, but definitely stay cool!

  3. Your poem offers a clear expression of the oppressive heat so much of our country is experiencing. Do you live in Florida, Laura? My daughter went to college in Florida, and she would say she missed the ability to inhale a clear, cool breath of air.

  4. global warming is real and its no mercy for so many throughout the world, its so bad that even the Ice cream truck has a out of order sign or a sold out sign, however believe it or not, it never lasts as long as it seems, summer is so fast and quick it ain’t even funny

  5. As I cringe in my barcolounger avoiding the 110 excessive heat conditions and contemplate your siren call to lure us all offshore, I made a short list of reasons to stay on dry land. Bear with me here; the immense Blue Whale, the predatory Bull Shark, the versatile Common Octopus, the powerful Electric Eel, and the voracious Great Barracuda. Other notable predators include the swift Great White Shark, the cunning Green Moray Eel, the intriguing Hammerhead Shark, and the stealthy Leopard Seal. Adding to this list are the formidable Lionfish, the elusive Mako Shark, the mysterious Moray Eel, and the graceful Orca. My list also includes the adaptable Pacific Sleeper Shark, the enigmatic Pelican Eel, the formidable Portuguese Man o’ War, and the razor-toothed Piranha. Further extending the variety are the fearsome Saltwater Crocodile, the lurking Sea Snake, the swift Shortfin Mako Shark, and the majestic Sperm Whale. Completing the list are the venomous Stonefish, the agile Tiger Shark, the versatile Wahoo, and the tenacious Yellowfin Tuna. And so, here I sweat, all alone in my tidy whiteys. You just keep on singing your song oh temptress siren.

  7. It’s a hundred here on the edge of the desert, but the lake is only 45 minutes away and it’s still so cold I can’t stay in for more than a few seconds. On the 4th a wave slammed my wife’s board down on mine and put a hole in the bottom of hers-hopefully the fiberglass repair kit gets here today. We’ve been doing home projects but we have to get up for a lake day before we incinerate!

    • Omg, sorry to hear about the paddle board, hope that gets fixed ASAP! Lake sounds fantastic, I’d definitely want to take a plunge if I could! Stay cool, those temps are brutal!!
