To live

What book could you read over and over again?

I recently started working overnights and 12 hours again, so it’s taken a bit of getting used to since I hadn’t for several months. Otherwise, I am completely thankful that things seem to be working out with this job in that I have a more normal schedule and can finally anticipate when I’ll have a day off.

So what does that have to do with the daily prompt, anyways?

It was around the 3AM hour and it was deathly silent. The new (old) place I work at is in the middle of nowhere and there’s a graveyard next to it (no, I swear). So it does have that vibe, especially at night being so dark, but if you know me at all, you know that the darkness and I are the best of friends.

It’s around this time at night usually when everything is in its silent hours that my ears start to ring.

I often say that I enjoy being alone with my thoughts, and it is so.

But the ringing is something I’ve tried to drown out for years.

No, it’s not tinnitus. The sound doesn’t remain constant. I’ve checked.

Some times I want to listen.

And sometimes I don’t.

But anyways, my attempt to drown out said deafening silence was to play some music, so for whatever reason I picked some random YouTube video to hopefully just…shut…it…up.

And then this quote by Oscar Wilde flashed across the screen:

To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”

I’ve always liked Oscar Wilde.
