What strategies do you use to cope with negative feelings?

If I could be here everyday…

I feel like I’ve gone over things like this before, and as my weekend off is upon us, I’m in a pretty good mood, so not thinking too much in a negative mindset.

Everyday I don’t have to go to work is a positive day and a blessing for me. 😂

As a collective, there’s a lot of negativity in the world right now.

So often we try to make excuses for when we feel bad.

It’s ok to feel hurt, betrayed, let down, angry.

Embrace the shadow and work through it.

Scream. Write. Purge. Emote.

Hit a punching bag, if needed.

Working out is also a great outlet for banishing negativity.

Also, have gratitude for what is going right in your life.

It might sound like a bit of toxic positivity to focus on the good if things ain’t going your way. However, sometimes if we feel grateful for whatever is going right in our life, that other thing doesn’t seem as bad. Or perhaps, it allows us to come up with solutions instead of wallowing in doubts or fears.

Venting also helps, if you have another person you can talk to.

Sometimes all we need is another perspective.

Be Mindful.

(I struggle with this, still)

Don’t dwell in a negative mindset.

Take note of your mental health. Is it just a passing negative thought or something deeper? We can sometimes go into despair and it isn’t always easy to come back from.

Breathe.

If you’re like me, and you feel like you need to do something – Light some incense/smudge (Palo Santo, Sage) and/ or cleanse your space (I like to use Florida Water).

Practice good self-care.

I like to take a shower and imagine all that crap, that gunk, that junky energy washing away as you are refreshed.

Cut cords, if needed.

Channel your negative emotions into something positive; create something.

Don’t put pressure on yourself to be perfect.

And remember, we all go through some darkness in order to appreciate the light.

    • I would love to go skinny dipping in a mountain lake 😂 I used to go skinny dipping in the beach here, but now I have to worry about being arrested lmao

      • Hahah heated would be amazing!! I definitely would love to go to a hot springs.
        I did swim in this lake (Lake Chelan) in October when I went to Washington, and yes it was coldddddd, but amazing 😊 third deepest lake in the US as well!
        I’ve been tentatively planning a visit to Lake Tahoe, it’s definitely gorgeous, I just have to find a time when it’s not too touristy (always a struggle)!

      • Tahoe… Absolutely NO such thing anymore. Take it from somebody who escaped Sacramento and headed East. It’s like going to the beach in Miami or heading to Gatlinburg. EVERY weekend, it’s an endless parade of tourist cars. Worse yet, it’s another example of business ruining the environment. For most of my life, you could see clear to the very bottom of Lake Tahoe. That’s 1645 feet down, (second deepest lake in North America). It stayed that way because power boats had always been banned on the lake. Tourism lobby bought off everyone though and now there are boats and jet skis, and cloudy water.

        Shasta… I’ve never been, but I’m told the water is always the temperature of bath water thanks to all the volcanic vents running under the lake.

      • Escaped Sacramento 😂 and I totally believe you! That is such a shame about Lake Tahoe, but I’m not surprised. Tourists really ruin everything. All for profit. It’s so hard to find authentic places and beauty that is unspoiled. When I went to Lake Chelan it was on a Wednesday during the mid-morning, and there was NO. ONE. …and it was magical…but I don’t doubt during the summer it gets crazy. Even year round, I’m sure.

        Let’s go to Lake Shasta! I’m ready! 😂

      • Oh you have NO idea with Sacramento. California being so incredibly mismanaged is why both of us used to be more conservative than we are now. I had blog page after blog page about attempted home break-ins, drug dealing in the park across the street, literal armies of homeless people, many of whom were overtly hostile… no police response to any of the crime either. When they legalized pot completely, the roads became filled with stoned drivers swerving in and out of lanes at random, and pot smell everywhere. Then there’s the governor letting PG&E burn down half the state with NO consequences, and blaming global warming instead. Yeah it was time to go.

        Shasta… sounds fun, but I have a feeling it could be trouble. 😉

      • Omg that sounds awful. 😢 it truly was an escape then. It just sounds like a takeover of madness. The driving part and the break-ins are most definitely scary, and this is coming from the land of people who are known for being crazy 😜 but in all seriousness, I’m glad you escaped. It’s such a beautiful state, too.

        Would you ever go back if things changed for the better? (Probably not likely anytime soon).

        And yes…could be trouble! 😆

      • California was surreal, to say the least. I can’t see us going back, the crazies have too much control. LA & SF (their general coastal areas) have the vast majority of the population and they dictate the ideas like those above that everybody has to live with. Worse, the ideas are genuinely spreading. You can’t believe how many times I got cussed out as hateful for posting about suspicious activity on NextDoor.com. Even after the same people would report that the shady looking people I reported had been breaking into places, I still got attacked. Geographically it’s a beautiful state, but I’m over it.

        Well, as long as it’s the right kind of trouble… 😉

      • That’s so unfortunate. And yeah, it sucks you gotta worry about offending everyone nowadays for just outright outrageous behavior.
        I can definitely understand being over it.

    Kind of related to the shower observation, I once read a tip that when you are exhaling, picture in your mind all the blackened, negative energy being expelled from your body, and when you breathe in, picture that you are bring cool, blue fresh energy into your body. I have found that to be an effective visual at times as well.

  2. Such helpful guidance. I’m the same, that I need to DO something usually, to clear a funk. But I also think looking at your photo might melt half of any negativity away!

    • Thank you! Yes, I feel like the physical act of clearing away actually DOES something as well!
      And yes, if I could actually be there…man! My cares would melt away, I think. Haha 😂

      • These days very few people empty their whole houses to clean, but my great grandmother used to. I remember all the furniture out on the lawn. She had birds, so there was a particular day when there were sun showers and I remember her scrambling to get the furniture. But the birds were very happy!

  3. laughter, bottle of water and blowing bubbles. if you go to a park make a big ole bubble and watch it land on somebody with a big ole turkey head its so funny. a big ole bubble on a crispy day landing on a head is hilarious just saying, dug your list

  4. Definitely needed these reminders! Especially that ‘Don’t dwell in a negative mindset’ – it can be frustrating sometimes when I’m convincing myself everything’s okay and that niggling whisper keeps on pestering me “you forgot THIS grey cloud.” Getting some fresh air and sinking into a warm bath do banish the brain gremlins, though 🙂 Good advice!

    • Thank you! It’s funny you mention baths, I don’t take them often but I was just thinking the other day how this could really be soothing for my soul. Fresh air is always a great way to gain some energy as well. And I feel you on the grey cloud analogy, it does seem to weigh heavily on my mind at times, but then also knowing all will be well again and nothing lasts forever does help, sometimes anyways! 😆

  5. To stay positive, I need a goal, no matter what. When I get out of bed, I need to know I’m doing something that brings me joy. Without such a plan to keep my engine running, I can quickly fall into the slope of depression. Simply put, I can’t just sit around doing nothing. Maybe that’s an illness too…
