Of Roses and Thorns

Hey everybody, hope y’all are doing well today!

🎶 “Every rose has its thorn…”🎵

I’m super excited to share that my poem, “Of Roses and Thorns,” has been chosen for publication by Spillwords Press!

I wrote this poem one night when I was purging some past negative energy. It has some darker tones, but I think a lot of people can relate to the poem and some of the painful feelings it may evoke.

It’s always a shame if you don’t take a chance on love ❤🌹

Of Roses and Thorns 🥀

Beneath the enchanting spell of moon
Passionate tales make lovers swoon
Upon night their gaze holds sultry desire
Entwined their bodies, a blissful fir
e

In light of morn, they soon forget
Like a rose with thorns, prickled regret
She loves him so, but he plays his games
Never a care, while she walks in shame…

This is a poem I’ve never featured on my blog before, so it would be a great honor for me if you could visit Spillwords to read the entirety of the poem!

Additionally, the editing team over at Spillwords really surprised me by letting me know they set up an author page for me:

I’m so full of gratitude! Looking forward to future contributions as well.

Thank you, as always, for reading.

I appreciate you. 😊

Hope you are having a blissful day. It’s Taco Tuesday 🌮 (Thank you, T’! 💕 So sorry I missed it!) and my last night of work, woohoo! 🙌

As an aside, I know this is a bit of an odd poem for the week of Valentine’s Day, but I’m sure some can relate to the feeling during this time of year now more than ever. 🌹

  1. Excellent and can reflect. I have a situation where I don’t know whether to or not. Got to work on myself as I don’t have much to offer. The energy of this person inspires a lot of safety in that I would feel safe to fall asleep in the same room as them

    • That’s so true, we often do have to work on ourselves and sometimes it takes another person to reflect that within or show us that. It’s always nice to feel safety and comfort in the person we care for. Best of luck to you!

  2. That was really deep but it has so much truth. A lot of people have had some misadventures and regrets. Life is a journey full of lessons. Sometimes we learn very hard lessons in moments of selfish desires. As long as you learn from it and grow, not all is lost.

    • That’s a great and introspective way to look at it, yes, growth and development and not stagnating or staying in the “hurt” of the past (of course, very hard to do!) or just being able to be open isn’t always easy but sometimes things (and people) force us to take a good look at ourselves, too. So true what you said about sometimes having regrets. Thankfully I’ve healed from many of those 🙏 which I am grateful for. Appreciate your kind thoughts 😊

  4. hi Laura!
about the concept of “love” like a cereal box with lots of advertising or a sparkling bottle of wine, a wild night of passion. Then , lust, lost. Wild emotions , with wild effects, wild players…such a game.

every rose has its thorn, poison.

  5. This poem is fire, Laura.

In light of morn, they soon forget
Like a rose with thorns, prickled regret
She loves him so, but he plays his games
Never a care, while she walks in shame.

That’s an excellent verse. The cadence is smooth and the thought is delivered superbly. It wraps itself so hauntingly and beautifully to the featured image.

  6. Your poem is amazing, Laura. Though there’s dark theme if I may say, but it’s fluid and beautiful to read. I love how you dance the words in rhythm. I’m not into poetry, but your poems are commendable. Keep shining, Laura. And congratulations! Cheers!

  7. There is no universal recipe for a happy and lasting relationship, people are simply too diverse – even within a single nuclear family.
Yet there are thousands upon thousands of methods, how to reliably ruin one.
And sure, first and foremost, one should be happy with themselves, before expecting anyone else to be happy with him/her.

    • Very true! Every connection is vastly different. Relationships are hard sometimes, and even when they’re good, sometimes there’s still inner work that has to be done by one or both parties. I agree, you should be happy with yourself, self love is so important! 😊

  8. I forgot to agree that, yes it is very hard to do. I wish I could remember where I saw this but I never forgot it. In a video on YouTube, there’s a part of our brain that grows every time we go through something very difficult and make the hard decision and grow from it. I wish I could remember.

  9. Strong, for me because it touches on such an intimate event that could easily disappear, if not for being honored and told aloud. ❤ Big congratulations!

    • Thank you! 💕 I think we need those purges so much, too – whether they come out in writing or dreaming, exercise or going inward through meditation. Release feels so much better, letting go of that negative energy. Hope you are feeling good 🙏 getting through that “stuck” energy is always hard!

      • Oh absolutely they’re so necessary, they keep us sane and growing as human beings. Yes, you feel so much lighter and better once you’re rid of all that pent up negative energy 😊💕
I let go of so much and am feeling a lot better, thank you! 🙏
